If you work in advertising and don't know who Hal Riney is or the work he has done, I urge you to do a little digging. I worked for Hal for almost four years and probably learned more about simple clear common sense thinking than anyone I've been around in this business. It wasn't always easy or enjoyable and he was more than once described to me as a "rat bastard," but he simply wouldn't settle for anything other than extraordinary work.
Hal passed away today at age 75. Below is a link to an article in AdAge.com and also a tribute written by Jeff Goodby. Well worth the read. He absolutely changed the business we're in for the better.
